Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the organization honors various recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil experienced a massive stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and the experience left his left leg majorly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would most likely become permanently in a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone in Adil’s situation walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they could not afford the device in addition to the comprehensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the wonderful grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
