Air Conditioner Options for Your Garage Conversion

So you’re considering converting your garage into another room as an addition to your house? Many people are doing so as it’s not only a fun and exciting project, but can add a fresh dose of character to your home. Of course a project like this requires plenty of preparation. Though we can’t turn you into a professional handyman, we can help you be ready to tackle the project by making sure you’re aware of all of your garage air conditioner options.

Besides the fun stuff for the game room or man cave you might be building, you need to think about an air conditioner as one of your highest priorities. Without it, your new room figures to be a lot less pleasant to spend time in during summer. There are three options to weigh when considering what kind of air conditioner is the best choice for your converted garage.

  1. You can connect an existing air duct from your house to the walls of your garage. This will only work if the garage and the home are connected and have a nearby duct that can be connected to your garage. This is definitely a job for someone with the proper experience, so consult with an expert from Bryant Heating & Cooling Service Experts to find out if this is a viable option for you.
  2. Install a ductless air conditioner, also known as a mini-split system. This type of air conditioner works on its own condenser that sits right outside the garage. The indoor AC mounts to the wall near the ceiling. A mini-split system is also a special kind of packaged HVAC system, which permits you to get an air conditioning system that can handle your heating needs in the cold months as well.
  3. Purchase a window air conditioner. If connecting an existing duct is not a possibility and the space isn’t very large, this could be a a great fit. However, there are a couple downsides to this method. It is not the most efficient for evenly distributing air, and is not the most efficient for energy usage. If there is not an existing window, a window air conditioner will leave a large hole in your wall that could look inviting to a determined thief.

If you’re ready to press on with your garage conversion project, make sure your air conditioner needs are properly met. After all, a new part of your house should feel just as comfortable as every other room.
