They’re also quite effortless to use. Unlike their woodburning equivalents, there’s no need to add firewood or sweep up ashes. But like any other natural gas units, these fireplaces need annual service to help them run efficiently and avoid failure.

When your fireplace won’t ignite or won’t stay lit, the specialists at Bryant Heating & Cooling Service Experts can help. Use our easy-to-understand hints first. If your fireplace still isn’t working properly, let us know. We can handle any brand.

Gas Fireplace Troubleshooting Tips

Fireplace Won’t Start

There could be several causes why your fireplace won’t turn on. Remove the ornamental piece beneath your fireplace to access its pieces.

  1. Is a breaker tripped? Take a look at your home’s electrical panel and adjust breakers as needed.
  2. Is the gas flowing? Verify the valve is in the “open” position.
  3. Is the pilot light burning? If it has blown out, follow manufacturer instructions to rekindle. Secure the vent cap to block drafts from putting it out.
  4. Pilot light ignites but won’t stay on? There could be an issue with the thermocouple, a metal safety sensor that monitors gas flow.
  5. Pilot light stays on but fireplace won’t heat? It could be the thermopile, a metal piece that converts heat to electricity to open the gas valve.
  6. If you have a suspicion there’s a problem with the thermocouple or thermopile, contact us for service.

Cleaning Your Gas Fireplace

Cleaning your gas fireplace on a routine basis can help it operate more efficiently and avoid pricey failures. It may even help it work longer.

  1. Verify your fireplace is totally cooled.
  2. Switch the gas off by spinning the valve to “off.”
  3. Take out the gas logs, examine them for cracks and clean them with a soft-bristled brush.
  4. Clear the lava rocks, vacuum them individually and remove soot with the brush.
  5. Clean the internal parts of the fireplace with a vacuum hose attachment.
  6. Rub down inside edges with a moist cloth. Use warm, soapy water to clean up dust or soot buildups.
  7. Replace lava rocks and logs in the same arrangement.
  8. Clean the glass casing with special fireplace glass cleaner and let it dry. Windex is not recommended as it can etch the glass or cause it to crack.
  9. If you have a vented gas fireplace, inspect the outside vent and discard debris such as leaves or bird nests.
  10. Make sure your carbon monoxide detector is functioning properly.
